Education is something that is being done to you; learning is something you do yourself with others. It is essential to move beyond the concept of peace education to that of learning for peace.

Learning takes place in a whole lot of contexts. The school is only one of them. The different components of the broad environment in which learning takes place (family, school, places of worship, work, broadcast media, Internet, street, etc.) are organically integrated (feed on each other) to form a learning ecology.

School is probably a crucial component of the learning ecology, however not in its current shape. The concept is in for a big overhaul.

• Role of incidental learning.

• Lost connection between the cognitive and emotive.

• Superordination/subordination of organically integrated learning structures.

Conclusion:

We must seek to create the conditions of learning for peace

(1) in the broad learning environment (not just the school)

(2) attending to cognitive and emotive factors

(3) in a lifelong learning perspective (including intergenerational processes)

(4) focusing on the essentially dialogic nature of learning.
